Astro Algebra - an algebra app designed to help teaching

All New iOS Tablet and Mobile Game App

The original idea for the algebra app came from a year 6 teacher and mathematics school leader, Mr. Lockett. The task was to create an app for children to continue learning out of school and improve their algebra knowledge.

He could not find a suitable app to support his teaching which led him to the conclusion that he had highlighted a gap in the market. With this in mind Mr Lockett approached the Zeta digital agency to develop his idea and work together to create this tool.

What we did

The collaboration between Zeta and Mr. Lockett defined the essential attributes necessary to make the app a success, such as offering value for money for individuals and schools whose budgets are often under pressure. In addition, it was decided the app should avoid passwords, to bypass login issues, be easy to download, not dependent on an internet connection and not display distracting advertising – a common problem.

The objective was to build an app to support teaching, be simple and intuitive to use, with a fun and appealing interface to keep users entertained whilst learning. The result is Astro Algebra, a fun app where children play quick-fire algebra questions on a range of different algebra topics.

The success

Launched and released on the Apple app store in September 2017, the app is available on both mobile phones and tablets, supporting iOS 9,10 and 11. We are are also plans to develop an Android version of Astro Algebra in 2018. The app provides a good balance between learn and play, with a flexible approach to allow users to take control of their learning, and supports learning and teaching of Algebra topics KS2 and KS3 (ages 10-14).

The team is proud of achieving multiple awards in the category for Educational Apps; the prestigious Bett Awards and the Horizon Interactive Web Awards.
